About the Imperial Turtle

Ervin William Reed, known as the Imperial Turtle, was anything but ordinary. With his extraordinary gift: a photographic memory , bright eyes, and unmatched charm, Ervin carried laughter, loyalty, and a healthy dose of mischief wherever he went. From his school days, he embraced the nickname ‘Turtle’ and carried it proudly into the skies as a WWII pilot.

The Turtle Club began as an informal “drinking fraternity” among WWII pilots seeking a place to unwind, share stories, and—when things got tough—find something to laugh about. It was on one of those unforgettable nights that the now-legendary phrase, “Are You A Turtle?” came to life, transforming the club from a gathering of pilots into a true brotherhood. To Ervin, being a Turtle meant having a sense of humor, a loyal heart, and a willingness to answer the club’s sacred question with the famous response: “You bet your sweet ass I am.”

Becoming a Turtle isn’t just an initiation—it’s a rite of passage. Prospective members must pass a lighthearted initiation, showing they’re ready to laugh, share a drink, and answer some of the club’s unique questions. Here, the answer isn’t as important as the laugh it brings, because every Turtle knows that a good story should never be interrupted by the truth.

The Turtle Club isn’t about where you come from or what you do; it’s about how hard you laugh and how loyal you are. The password is just a reminder of that—humor, loyalty, and camaraderie are at the heart of every Turtle.

Today, the Turtle Club lives on as a tribute to Ervin Tortel and the brave (and slightly mischievous) pilots who founded it. From the iconic “Are You A Turtle?” initiation to the lost lyrics of the Imperial Turtle Song, each tradition reminds us that friendship, laughter, and loyalty are what truly make us “ancient and honorable.” So, whether you’re a new Turtle or a longtime member, welcome to the club—you’re in good company.
